ArticlesAbstract
Short-term financial forecasting is a challenging computational problem because financial markets exhibit nonlinear behaviour, temporal dependencies, volatility clustering, and frequent structural changes. Traditional statistical forecasting methods provide valuable benchmarks but may struggle to represent complex interactions among market prices, trading volumes, technical indicators, macroeconomic variables, and investor sentiment. This article examines an adaptive machine learning framework for short-term financial forecasting using multivariate data representations. The proposed framework integrates heterogeneous financial variables, temporal feature engineering, rolling-window model training, adaptive ensemble learning, and uncertainty-aware prediction. It considers autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), random forest, gradient boosting, long short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and attention-based architectures as alternative forecasting approaches. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between model adaptability, multivariate feature representation, forecasting horizon, and changing market conditions. A reproducible empirical evaluation framework is developed around chronological data partitioning, rolling-origin validation, forecast-error measures, directional accuracy, and transaction-cost-adjusted performance. The article synthesizes findings from established research and recent literature to identify methodological limitations, including data leakage, nonstationarity, inconsistent benchmark selection, and the frequent separation of statistical accuracy from practical financial utility. The proposed framework emphasizes transparent comparisons, computational efficiency, and continuous monitoring rather than assuming that complex models always outperform simpler alternatives. The resulting methodology provides a foundation for systematic empirical investigation of adaptive forecasting systems for equities, market indices, foreign exchange, and other liquid financial instruments. Actual predictive superiority must be established through experiments on appropriately selected datasets and cannot be inferred from model architecture alone.
