  • Abstract

    The online marketplace revolution has changed the way the world trades and trades—products and services can now be conveniently bought and sold from anywhere in the world via digital platforms. Consumer trust is one of the most impactful factors affecting e-commerce purchasing behavior and is a constantly evolving issue with e-commerce. Compared to brick-and-mortar stores, online marketplaces come with a higher level of uncertainty as there is no physical interaction, no way of inspecting the product, or no direct contact between buyer and seller. Thus, consumers' readiness to transact online is affected by the different technological, organizational, and psychological factors. The current research examines factors that impact consumer trust in online marketplaces, such as website security, privacy protection, payment security, seller reputation, customer reviews, product quality, service reliability, delivery performance, return policies, and customer support. The paper presents a detailed literature review and formulates a conceptual model covering all these aspects to explain how these factors collectively help to build the trust and to develop purchasing intention. Moreover, it addresses how emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, machine learning, and big data analytics can help build trust and deliver a better customer experience. The results highlight that consumer trust is a multi-dimensional construct which directly affects consumer satisfaction, customer loyalty and sustainability of business. Overall, the study offers valuable insights for researchers, developers of e-commerce platforms, online retailers, and policymakers aiming to create safe, transparent, and customer-friendly digital marketplaces that can boost and maintain consumer trust and provide a competitive edge.
