  • Abstract

Cross-border electronic commerce (CBEC) has transformed global trade by enabling businesses and consumers to engage in international transactions through digital platforms. Emerging markets have experienced rapid growth in cross-border e-commerce due to increasing internet access, smartphone adoption, digital payments, and logistics development. However, challenges such as regulatory complexities, customs procedures, payment security risks, logistics inefficiencies, technological limitations, and consumer trust issues continue to hinder growth. Additional barriers include cultural differences, language diversity, currency fluctuations, and varying taxation policies. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often face difficulties in meeting international trade and logistics requirements. This study examines the major operational, technological, financial, and regulatory challenges affecting cross-border e-commerce in emerging markets. Findings indicate that logistics inefficiencies, regulatory uncertainty, payment security concerns, and inadequate digital infrastructure are the most significant barriers. The study highlights the importance of strengthening digital ecosystems, modernizing customs processes, enhancing cybersecurity, and promoting international cooperation to improve cross-border trade performance and support sustainable e-commerce growth.
