ArticlesAbstract
Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are a key component of modern digital systems thanks to their flexibility, reconfigurability, and capability to deliver their high-performance hardware solutions in several other fields such as telecommunications, artificial intelligence, data centers, automotive electronics, and aerospace systems. With the growing complexity of systems and the requirement for data processing, high operating frequencies and higher throughput have become an important design objective. This has increased the need for advanced RTL design methodologies that may optimally use these FPGA resources given strict timing and performance constraints. Although FPGA technology has made significant development, designers still experience problems with time closure, routing congestion, resource utilization, and power-performance trade-offs. Conventional RTL coding approaches are not always suitable for high-speed applications, particularly in highly pipelined and resource intensive designs. In this study we provide a set of advanced RTL design approaches, targeted at improving speed, scalability along with temporal predictability of FPGA-based systems. The presented approach includes optimum pipelining techniques, efficient resource allocation, latency aware architectural segmentation, clock domain management and timing aware RTL coding techniques. The performance of these solutions is then evaluated on a genuine case study involving the design of a high-speed FPGA processing architecture. Experimental results show considerable increases in maximum operating frequency, timing closure success rate as well as overall design efficiency with the trade-off of acceptable resource use. The findings highlight the significant impact of well structured RTL strategies on the optimization of FPGA performance. The main objective of this study is to give a systematic and practical framework for designing high-speed FPGA designs that achieve reliable timing closure along with their better performance, thereby providing crucial guidance for engineers constructing next-generation digital systems.
