  • Abstract

Surviving technological upheaval demands alignment of investments and operations with risk management and maturity. Optimization-supported analysis and decision models exploit risk-aware portfolios of technology initiatives, opportunities, and assets to accelerate enterprise adaptive capability. Decision intelligence combines decision-making processes with the power of optimization to support informed choices. Risk-aware technology portfolio governance requires explicit definition of decision variables, objective, constraints, evaluation metrics, solution approach, and sources of uncertainty. Models integrating risk into performance criteria enable technology planning amid uncertainty. Technology portfolios govern versatile analysis of capabilities and needs, whether at the enterprise, business unit, operational area, or project group level. Rethinking operations on the basis of risk and variability opens up opportunities for novel or more efficient solutions, especially when supported by optimization. Adaptive decisions determine how to proceed under conditions of limited information or in response to novelty; recognizing and acting on unanticipated novelty is a key source of advantage. Software-enabled risk-aware adaptive portfolio governance aligns these two streams of risk-aware decision analysis into a cohesive integration of technology and operations in response to uncertainty and technology evolutions.
